-My son is turning 4 this year, and can go to preschool next year.
When I research things your child should be able to do before they start school, I find school 'lists' for beginning big school (kindergarten or year 1 depending on what state you live in), but none for starting preschool.
Example: For starting big school, a child should know how to cut, paste, use pencils, share, pull pants up and down, wipe their own bottom. This particular list also has "Now would be a good time to start practicing doing up buttons."
This list only has a few things that my son can't do. For example, he can't (Or refuses to) wipe his own bottom after using the toilet. He also can't do up buttons. I'm not really worried about either of these, as he recognises colours, shapes, and he's learning to recognise letters of the alphabet. He knows how to sing the alphabet and only gets "m n o" wrong.
Is there a list out there for starting preschool? Does anyone have any tips? What your son already knows is great! What a great parent you are! You could work on more self help bathroom skills, as well as the buttons, tying shoes etc. However, many preschools have manipulatives that help with these skills. In addition to what your son already knows, expressing his wants and needs is of high importance. Communication skills will help the teachers to better help him and let you know what he is learning, as well as how he is adjusting to his new experience. Fine motor coordination and visual motor skills will be developed by you through turning pages of the books that you read to him, putting puzzles together, drawing with big crayons, picking up after himself, finger painting ( some even do this with pudding, under adult supervision, of course).
Being able to listen and relate to stories for a period of time, as well as following one and two step directions is also of high importance. Getting along well with other children, adults and showing respect are vital for a successful preschool experience. I definitely think that you are on the right track. I wish you and your son a happy, healthy and victorious preschool experience.
