What should my pre schooler know before ?

-pre-k ....what should a kid learn ??If a child has an interested adult to spend time with, he should learn all he needs to naturally - no formal teaching required.

For example, if someone kicks a ball around with him, plays chasings, takes him swimming, takes him to the playground/park and on walks around the neighbourhood and if he has opportunities to climb and ride a tricycle/bike, his gross motor skills will be fine.

If he is allowed to help cook, put things away around the house, play with Lego and building bricks and draws/scribbles and does a few puzzles, his fine motor skills are also likely to be fine.

If he gets to play in a sandpit, play with other kids, has the odd visit to a museum, art gallery or other place of interest and has opportunities to dress up and play make-believe games (alone and with other kids) his creativity and social skills will develop.

But the most important things is that an adult reads to him. Every day for at least ten minutes.

This doesn't have to be at bedtime or only at bedtime. Other times of the day are great too. Choose fantastic books and read them with enthusiasm and have fun together. Do this and his language skills will be fine - great in fact!

Rhymes and poems are especially important because they help develop something called 'phonological awareness'. This has been shown to be the most important predictor of how a child will do at school. Kids who have developed it usually need little in the way of formal teaching to read. These are the kids who 'just seem to pick it up' - naturally and easily. Kids who haven't developed phonological awareness struggle with reading and this spills over into everything else at school.

So read poems and nursery rhymes and other books. Play games with the words and sing and clap the rhymes.

My point is that all these things are things many parents do without thinking about it. They're the normal, natural things parents always used to do.

Trouble is, nowadays mums work and everyone works hard and longer hours and there are so many electronic distractions that we sometimes don't do any of it. Worse, we don't realise we aren't doing it and how important it is until our child goes to school and we realise there's a problem.

(mum to 3 teens)You mean before they go to Preschool or before Kindergarten?

In the threes they learn colors, shapes, and numbers at least up to ten and sing the alphabet. They should be able to recognize their first name. They should be cutting with scissors and know how to use a zipper button and maybe even tie a little. String beads, Jump (feet actually leave the ground), Floor Puzzles or 24 piece puzzles with no frame. (you can follow age recommendations on the puzzle boxes), They should be learning to hold the pencil/crayon correctly. Also look for them being to be able to draw people or certain objects and you be able to recognize them.

In the fours they need to also be able to write their name, count to twenty, recognize their last name, recognizing friends names is great too. all skills mentioned in the threes list should be nearly perfected or at least very improved.

Cut, Glue, Color, Paint, Count, Sing, Dance!!!

The alphabet and basic counting would do wonders. I could do my alphabet and count to 100 by the time I was 4. And some basic manners. I had those as well. Your child will be much loved by the teachers. Most parents have kids and expect the teachers to teach them EVERYTHING. I know this for a fact because my SIL is a pre k teacher. SHe says most kids are animals that haven't been taught anything.
you could teach him or her the basic words

basic multiplication table

or the theories of quantum physics

and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lywXhb7Dn鈥?/a>
you could teach them ABC or let them learn how count 1 to 100. Also you could teach them how to look at shape and color and make them read books. That what they could learn.
Abc!s numbers hearing and answering back when you read a book colors movement painting sharing dressing self conning hair self doing homework
